Mission

We are co-leading the global movement for a perennial, diverse, truly regenerative agriculture at a scale that matches the enormity of the intertwined climate, water, and food energy crises.

Profile

Transforming how we grow grains is key to a viable, equitable future in a stable climate. Grains nourish the world, providing 70% of the global diet, but annual grain monoculture farming has set us on an extractive course of massive loss of soil carbon, severe erosion at a global scale, and high inputs of persistent chemicals. In this context, agriculture must be completely reconsidered.

The Land Institute aims to transform how we grow staple crops by developing a full suite of perennial grains, legumes, and pulses; crops that will enrich the soil, sequester more carbon, suppress weeds, reduce pesticide use, and better mimic natural ecosystems. As the climate crisis quickens, and water and land impacts worsen, time is of the essence to deliver on the enormous promise of perennial grains.
